Let There Be Energy Efficient Light

As many churches and cathedrals across the UK look at ways in which they can save money, St John’s Church in Edinburgh has taken matters into their own hands by installing LED floodlights to light the outside of the building.

As part of an ongoing cost saving exercise the Church had asked Edinburgh Council to improve their external lighting and the solution proposed was to replace their energy sapping 500 Watt Tungsten Halogen flood lights and 150 Watt projector lights with revolutionary LED luminaires that demand just 36 Watts.

LED lighting technology has developed dramatically and the advanced lumen packages that LEDs now deliver allow effective functional lighting enabling the feasible replacement of large wattage SON or Metal halide lamp sources.

Effective colour rendering is a crucial element in the lighting of church buildings to provide variation and depth and depth to the stone work. LEDs also increases the ability to control the colour of light using cool white, warm white or colour changing solutions.

Security in church grounds is high priority and the flexibility available using forms of lighting controls such as PIR in conjunction with LED lighting achieves peace of mind at little or no energy costs.

The transformation has enabled the Church to achieve a reduction of over 90% in running costs and, with LED’s amazing life expectancy of 70,000 hours, the Church is now looking forward to trouble-free and maintenance-free lighting for the next 19 years.

St John’s Executive Manager, Mr Graeme Glover, said “We are absolutely delighted with the new lights which achieve everything and more than the previous ones but using a fraction of the cost. Not only are we doing our bit to help the environment in terms of reducing our carbon footprint, we can look forward to saving thousands of pounds over the coming years.”

Paul Goddard, Sales Manager of Eness Lighting, who manufacture the Leo LED floodlight, explained “The rise in energy costs over the last 18 months has meant that many organisations including churches are being forced to rethink their consumption levels.”

“Our Leo floodlight is just one of a number of energy saving solutions that we can offer, however with savings of over 90% like those achieved by St Johns church, the Leo is one of the most attractive.”
